Kayakers found the skull fragment in September while turning the Minnesota River south of Sacred Heart, a city about 100 miles west of Minneapolis, according to the Renville County Sheriff’s Office.

Kayakers sent the skull to local officials, who determined that the bones were human. The fragment was then sent to an FBI forensic anthropologist, who estimated through carbon dating that the skull belonged to a young man who lived between 5,500 and 6,000 BC.

Forensic anthropologists also determined that the man had suffered a severe head injury as evidenced by a dent in his skull. Additionally, the carbon data suggest that the young man either had a diet high in fish or ate significant amounts of corn, tapioca or sorghum.

This fossil discovery marks another discovery in Minnesota that belongs to the Archaic period of North American cultures, which archaeologists mark spans from 1,000 to 8,000 BC. The Archaic period was characterized by cultures that pro- posed themselves by eating nuts, seeds, and shellfish before subsistence farming.

Another famous human fossil was found in Minnesota from the same period. In 1931, construction crews at Pelican Rapids in northwestern Minnesota found the skeleton of a teenage girl believed to be about 8,000 years old. The rest – Dubbed the “Minnesota Woman” – was found along with a dagger made of elk horn and a conch shell pendant.
