MLB All-Star Game 2022: Sights, sounds from MLB Draft


Three days 2022 MLB The official draft is underway.

For the first time in MLB history, the sons of former major players were chosen with the top two picks, as Baltimore Orioles Jackson Holliday chose (number 1) and Arizona Diamondbacks take Druw Jones (number 2).

Nearly 600 players will be selected in total, with the first 80 picks taking place on Sunday, followed by Round 3-10 on Monday and concluding with Round 11-20 on Tuesday. The Los Angeles Dodgers was the only team with no pick in the first round; they kept the first pick of the second round in 40th place overall.

This year’s draft comes after baseball’s youngest stars appeared on Saturday MLB All-Star Future Game.

Here are the highlights from the 2022 MLB Draft:

1. Baltimore Orioles: Jackson Holliday, SS, HS SR, 6 foot-1, 175 pounds

The Orioles chose Oklahoma-based Stillwater High School on the Jackson Holliday stop, son of seven-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger winner Matt Hollidaywith the first overall selection in this year’s draft.

The 18-year-old broke the national high school record for hits in a season with 89 in 41 games while hitting .685/.749/1.392 balls. He stole 30 bases, hit 17 home runs, and scored 79 RBI.

Holliday joins Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. as the only son of former track and field athletes selected as No. 1 overall.

2. Arizona Diamondbacks: Druw Jones, OF, HS SR, 6 foot-4, 180 pounds

The Diamondbacks drafted the Georgia high school past quarterback Druw Jones, son of 10-time Golden Glove winner Andruw Jones, with the #2 pick overall.

The Wesleyan High School senior, who ranks #1 on the MLB’s Top 250 Draft Prospects list going Sunday, is expected to play college baseball at Vanderbilt before being selected in the draft this year.

3. Texas Rangers: Kumar Rocker, P, 4YR JR, 6 foot-5, 245 pounds

For the third overall pick, Rangers picked right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker, 38th place on the MLB 250 Top Prospects list. The 22-year-old arrived in Texas after being unsigned by the MLB 250. New York Mets as choice number 10 in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The National Team has selected Elijah Green of IMG Academy, 18-year-old elite athlete and son of former NFL Pro Bowler Eric Green, with the fifth overall pick.

6. Miami Marlins: Jacob Berry, 3B, 4YR SO, 6 feet-0, 212 pounds

The Marlins picked third LSU player and quarterback Jacob Berry in 6th place overall. Berry played his freshman season at Arizona, where he earned the 2021 National Freshman of the Year recognition hitting .352/.439/.676 with 54 runs scored, 19 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs and 70 RBIs.

The 21-year-old spent most of his LSU season as a designated hitter and played only nine of his 63 games in third-base, which is his primary spot with the Tigers .

7. Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, P, 4YR SO, 6 foot-1, 211 pounds

The Cubs picked Oklahoma right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, who registered at number 24 on the MLB 250 Top Draft Prospects list, with a seventh overall pick. Horton slideshow for the Sooners at this year’s College World Series.

8. Minnesota Twins: Brooks Lee, SS, 4YR JR, 6 foot-2, 205 pounds

The Twins picked Cal Poly shortstop Brooks Lee with an eighth overall pick in this year’s draft. After missing nearly the entire 2020 season shortened following knee and hamstring surgery, Lee is back in 2021 to claim the Big West Player of the Year award by achieving .342/ 384 / .626.

9. Kansas City Royals: Gavin Cross, OF, 4YR JR, 6 foot-3, 210 pounds

The Royals picked Virginia Tech quarterback Gavin Cross with pick number 9. Cross leads the 2021 US National Team roster stacked at batting average (.467) and leads the team with four main players. houses, 12 RBIs and three bases were stolen.

The Philadelphia Phillies picked Bishop Gorman High School quarterback Justin Crawford in 17th place. He is the son of MLB All-Star, Golden Glove Award and Carl Crawford Silver Slugger Award Winner.

In 18th place, Cincinnati Reds chose Cam Collier, whose father, Lou Collier, played for seven years in the major leagues. He was the youngest player selected in the first round at just 17 years and 8 months.

Number game

Of the 32 selections in the first round, 14 players (43.75%) came straight from high school or prep school, and 18 (56.25%) were selected outside of college. Of those 18 college draft choices, five came from SEC schools, followed by ACC, Big 12, Pac-12, and Sun Belt with two choices each.
