MLB suspends 12 players, coaches for roles in Seattle Mariners-Los Angeles Angels brawl; Phil Nevin gets 10 games

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Angel of Los Angeles Interim coach Phil Nevin was banned for 10 matches and Seattle Mariners midfielder Jesse Winker received a seven-match ban from Major League Baseball for their role in a bench brawl during the second half of Sunday’s game.

Nevin and Winker are two of 12 players or coaches suspended between teams, according to an MLB statement Monday night.

Mariners shortstop JP Crawford received five games, angel pitchers Ryan Tepera and Andrew Wantz three-man suspension and midfielder Mariners Julio RodriguezAngel’s pain reliever Raisel Iglesias and major league interpreter Manny Del Campo received two games.

Angel’s Third Warrior Anthony Rendon, who is out for the rest of the season after wrist surgery, will be given a five-match ban when he returns to the injury list. Currently, he is banned from the bench for the next seven matches.

Nevin received a substantial suspension because opener Wantz intentionally threw at Winker while warnings were issued to both teams. Nevin made the late decision to throw Wantz instead of the scheduled starter Jose Suarez.

Nevin is suspended starting Monday night as the Angels open a home series against Chicago White Sox. The bench coach Ray Montgomery, who received a two-match suspension, will replace Nevin. Montgomery and head coach Bill Haselman (one game) will begin their suspensions after assistant coach Dom Chiti returns from a five-match ban.

The penalties were announced within 90 minutes of the game between Los Angeles’ and Seattle on Monday night.

Winker was hit by the first pitch of the second inning by Wantz, who also threw a pitch behind Rodriguez’s head in the first inning. Wantz, who was suspended for three games, was the only player who did not appeal.

The throw to Rodriguez seems to be the Angels’ response to Erik Swanson95 mph speed near the ball fast Mike Troutthe beginning of the ninth inning on Saturday night. Trout expressed his frustration with the pitch after that game.

Winker reacts to being hit by Wantz, screaming angrily and gesturing towards the Angel’s dugout. That resulted in both the benches and the barn being empty near the Los Angeles dugout on the third base side. The scuffle lasted for nearly four minutes, with both teams seemingly throwing a lot of punches.

The game was delayed for 18 minutes. Of the eight who were disqualified, Seattle director Scott Servais was the only one not suspended.

Before the ban was announced, Nevin countered that he used Wantz to throw at Seattle players.

“That’s not the reality. But I don’t want to start a war of words with that,” Nevin said. “What’s done is done. Yesterday is over and done. Today we focus on the White Sox.”
