MLB World Series: Singer sings the national anthem
HOUSTON –
Grammy-nominated singer Eric Burton lost track of the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Friday night’s World Series opening game between Houston and Philadelphia.
With players and staff lined up on the field for the traditional pre-match ceremony, and a giant American flag stretched across the field, the Black Pumas frontman went astray at the second line. He sang: “So proud we’ve welcomed the sunset’s final stream” instead of “sparkling.”
He continued precisely with: “Wide stripes and bright stars in whose perilous war.” But then, instead of “Oh, the ramparts we’re watching go live like crazy?” he steps back to “So proud we have greeted the last sunset” before singing “streaming” instead of “sparkling”.
Burton then picked right with “And the red light of the rocket, the bomb exploded in the air” and finished brilliantly.
Burton performed at a televised concert last year for the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.
