Model S-sized electric sedan launched by the end of 2022

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its next all-electric luxury sedan, the 2023 EQE sedan, which is set to follow in the footsteps of the new Mercedes-Benz. 2022 Mercedes EQS ships and arrive in the United States by the end of 2022.

Since the EQS is the electric equivalent of the S-Class, the 2023 Mercedes EQE is the electric equivalent of the E-Class. In prototype form, it measures 196.6 inches long, 77.2 inches wide, and 59.5 inches high — all within an inch. Tesla Model WILL.

The EQE is also sized and positioned close enough to call Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT competitors, as well as upcoming Lucid Air and slightly smaller BMW i4.

The sedan was first introduced in late 2021, but we recently got the chance to roam around Los Angeles in the new car to preview what the electric E-Class has to offer.

EQS bones pay dividends

The EQE rides on the same dedicated EV platform as the EQS and has a remarkably long wheelbase of 122.9 inches, seven inches longer than the gas-powered E-Class sedan. That allows for more cabin and occupant space, Mercedes doesn’t provide exact numbers but says there’s about 4 inches of additional rear legroom. While the EQE won’t get the premium rear seats like the features EQS enjoys like heated/ventilated rear seats and power reclining, it’s still a very comfortable, spacious area for trips. go long.

Like the larger EQS, the EQE follows a futuristic “single bow” configuration that is purely aerodynamic in some details. A scalloped hood helps give a clean look to the front, and with the wheels pushed out towards the corners thanks to the wheelbase, the space that extends visually from the front wheel to the front door makes The EQE looks exceptionally long with no other cars next to it. on it for context. In fact, if there is no EQE nearby it will be mistaken for an EQS quite often.

Unlike both the Model S and EQS, which are hatchbacks, the EQE is a traditional sedan, with a fixed rear window and separate trunk lid. Mercedes points out that it explored placing a hatch on the EQE, but the hinge would impede too much rear headroom for the rear seats, so it went with a more traditional sedan solution.

I drove the EQE 350+, a rear-wheel drive version with a single permanent magnet motor in the rear wheel producing 288 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes says that it will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph. This is the sedan version that will arrive first, followed by the all-wheel drive version at a determined date. The AMG EQE The performance model will arrive in early 2023, offering a dual-engine AWD setup for 617 hp and 701 lb-ft or up to 677 hp and 738 lb-ft with boost mode as part of the range. Dynamic Plus package. Mercedes has quoted a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds with that package. That’s in line with the more powerful AMG EQE 53 model Europe will receive, the less powerful model number 43 which won’t make its way to US shores.

From decommissioning, the EQE 350+ launched quickly and smoothly. There’s no localized jerkiness like you get from other performance EVs, but it picks up speed with ease. Interior quiet is like the EQS, the only thing I can hear is the humming of an “invigorating” sound scene that Mercedes offers (which can be muted by the driver). But the EQE definitely comes out stiffer and you can feel more curves and imperfections. This is on purpose, as the EQE is designed to deliver a more sporty and oriented ride, but we’ll have to wait and see how these changes play out. more thoroughly.

Likely to beat Taycan and E-Tron GT in range

A flat 90.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack lies on the floor and appears to use a very high level of energy as usable capacity. Mercedes-Benz claims a 410-mile range based on Europe’s WLTP cycle — so expect some 400-mile fewer vehicles in the US. I took a quick computer photo of the trip and it showed 194 miles of range left at 64% battery, which translates to about 303 miles of range. The pack will fully charge in 9.5 hours with a 32-amp Level 2 connector (240 volts) and DC fast charging at 110 kw will allow a 10 to 80 percent increase in 31 minutes.

EQE, like EQS, provides Hyperscreen layout, consisting of a central 17.7-inch OLED screen and two 12.3-inch screens, one for the dashboard and one for the passengers, all framed in glass making it look like a unique interface. From the front seats, the only thing missing to make it an experience akin to the EQS are the wonderfully comfortable suede pillows that the flagship attaches to its seats. The base layout includes a 12.8-inch vertical vertical OLED touchscreen along with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster. The interface includes a “zero layer” approach to the interface that eases navigation through pre-existing enhanced menus and videos that can help with navigation by overlaying an image of the location. And 64-color LED interior lighting helps to establish the desired cabin ambience.

In addition to the full suite of active safety equipment you’d expect from a new Mercedes-Benz product, the German automaker has included some notable technology in the feature list. The list includes active fragrance and four-zone climate control, air suspension and rear-wheel drive. This system allows the rear wheels to “steer” up to 10 degrees to aid maneuverability or agility, while also adding stability on the highway and reducing the vehicle’s turning radius from 41 to 35 feet. . The available front door will automatically open the handle when the driver approaches, and the driver’s door will automatically open and close by pressing the brake pedal.

Mercedes says pricing details for each vehicle will be available closer to launch, as well as the launch of an AWD version of the EQE.
