Mohammed Shami returns as India announces T20I team against Australia and South Africa
The selectors, on Monday (September 12), announced Team IndiaTeam of the T20I series against Australia and South Africa at home. Mohammed Shami has returned to the T20I team for the first time since the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year.
Australia will play three T20I matches in India from September 20-25. Matches will be held in Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad. Proteas will then appear in a three-game T20I series from September 28 to October 4. Games will be played in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati and Indore.
Rohit Sharma will lead both teams, quite similar to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2022 which was announced simultaneously. While Shami featured in the T20Is main lineup against Australia and South Africa, he was named as one of four substitutes for the T20 World Cup.
Left-hander Arshdeep Singh will not be part of the T20Is against Australia, but has been named in the squad for the series against South Africa. Similarly, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and veteran tennis player Bhuvneshwar Kumar were selected for the matches against Australia, but not for the T20Is against South Africa.
Explaining the choice, a BCCI note reads:
“Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will report to the NCA on air conditioning work during the home series against Australia and South Africa.”
After T20Is, South Africa will also play three games a day against Men in Blue from October 6-11. However, the players selected from the T20 World Cup are unlikely to feature in this series because of the event. The ICC in Australia starts on October 16. .
