Mom sews an evening dress for her daughter from 50 years old fabric bought by her father in Thailand


A Westside High School senior is talking with her about family history at this year’s prom. “It’s really delicate fabric,” says Liz Keyes. When Ellie Bowen-Keyes needed a dress for the prom, she asked her mother, Liz Keyes, to make one. Bowen-Keyes said: “My mother always made me dresses. Seniors missed prom last year because of the pandemic. This year, Bowen-Keyes says is special. “This is my first prom,” Bowen-Keyes said. It is special in many ways. “I didn’t know what I wanted that fabric to look like, but when I saw it, I really liked it,” says Bowen-Keyes. The fabric used to make Ellie’s dress has been in the family for a long time. “When I was three or four years old, my dad went away for work. He worked in Thailand and would send back things like jewelry, dolls, sundries and more,” says Keyes. “He also sent back the fabric because my mother sewed it.” Keyes’ mother never used this fabric and it’s been around for over 50 years. “I heard my grandma and my mom say, ‘Well, why don’t you take this cloth, Liz,’ and she said, ‘That color doesn’t suit my skin,’ so she said, ‘Ellie’ come in,” and I said, “I really like it,” said Bowen-Keyes. Keyes immediately started working, but two weeks before the prom, there was a problem. “We tried on the dress. tried that and she said, ‘I don’t like this part, this part and then I don’t like this part,’ and I said, ‘Well, that’s the whole dress,'” Keyes said. They have made adjustments. “Finally I finished it last night at 12:30 a.m.,” Keyes said. On the morning of the prom, the dress was finished and Ellie was ready for her big night. “I actually went to prom for the first time,” says Bowen-Keyes. Keyes said: “She’s really beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing that in her.” Keyes called the dress “new antique”. Now, the story behind it is one that will last for generations.
