More details emerge about January 6 witness at the heart of Donald Trump witness tampering allegations

A day after Liz Cheney revealed that Donald Trump had attempted to contact one of the committee’s witnesses on January 6, more details emerged about the person in question.

The witness the former president is said to have contacted is a White House employee. The name of the person who cooperated with the commission investigating the riots in the capital, has not been made public.

News of potential witness tampering was first revealed by the committee’s vice chair on January 6, Ms. Cheney, who said Mr. Trump tried to call one of the panel’s witnesses.

“Following our final hearing, President Trump attempted to call a witness in our investigation,” Cheney said in her closing statement at the end of the hearing.

“A witness you’ve never seen in these hearings,” she added. “The person declined to answer or answer President Trump’s call and instead notified their attorney about the call. Their attorneys alerted us and the committee provided that information to the Department of Justice.”

She did not disclose more details about the person or motive of the call. Trump has yet to comment publicly on the allegations.

Two sources told CNN that the person contacted was believed to be a “support agent” who was not in regular contact with Mr Trump and was “concerned” about the alleged contact attempt.

According to sources, the witness was in a position to partially confirm the testimony of former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to the committee.

CNN said it was informed of the “location” of the witness Trump contacted but not the individual’s name.

Democratic Representative from California Pete Aguilar, who serves on the committee, told the newspaper that the person contacted was speaking to the panel and that it was Mr Trump who “called someone who spoke to us”. I”.

This is not the first time Cheney, a Republican, has raised the issue of Mr. Trump’s ability to tamper with witnesses.

Previously, the Wyoming lawmaker said there had been a form of potential witness tampering that raised “substantial concern” and read parts of the provisions indicating witness tampering.

Cheney told the hearing that a witness told the committee that the former president’s allies had told them they would “continue to stay in the Trump world” as long as “I’m protecting the person who I need protection.”
