Mother kills infant, boyfriend in crash after police chase her for allegedly stealing Walmart baby stuff
A Louisiana mother was arrested this week for ramming her car amid a high-speed police pursuit and killing her 5-week-old baby and her boyfriend. Police believe she stole childcare items from Walmart, WSAZ reports, before they pursued her.
Candace Gill, 38, was driving during the rollover and didn’t listen to orders to stop the vehicle.
Walmart employee alleged that mother was shopping
Walmart employees alleged to police on May 9 that Gill and her boyfriend, Edward Williams, were shopping for baby goods, the station reported. Soon after, police discovered Gill’s silver Chevrolet Camaro. The file states that “the officer pursued and activated the lights and sirens, but the vehicle failed to stop.”
Reports allege that at one point, Gill was driving over his shoulder, ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle at an intersection. Williams died at the scene, and Gill’s child was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. Police believe the mother did not keep the child in the car properly before the crash.
Mother Fled scene of the accident
The mother is said to have fled the scene but police later found her at an apartment complex. The next evening, after the officer received a tip about her location. The police report did not immediately detail what children’s items Gill is alleged to have stolen before the crash or whether police recovered them. This tragic incident occurred amid news of a nationwide shortage of baby formula.
Authorities charged Candace Gill with two counts of manslaughter, four counts of negligent injury, and one count of shoplifting. Prison records show she is currently at the Ouachita Correctional facility on a $21,950 deposit.
