MTV Movie & TV Awards: Olivia Rodrigo wins Best Musical Documentary

Olivia Rodrigo was one of the first winners at the MTV Movie & TV Awards in a night that could see “Spider-Man: No Way Home” win a number of trophies, while also celebrating Jennifer Lopez’s career. and Jack Black.
Rodrigo won Sunday’s Best Musical Documentary for the project “Olivia Rodrigo: Driving home 2 u.” The 19-year-old Grammy winner spoke about the importance of making the film, including a road trip, live performances and musings on her debut album “Sour.”
“I did the ‘2u drive home’ for the fans, especially those who couldn’t come see me on tour,” said Rodrigo.
Billed as “an epic, global one-night event,” this year’s ceremony was held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
The awards kicked off with “Loki” star Sophia Di Martino winning her breakout performance for her role as Sylvie on the Disney Plus TV series. After the actor accepted the trophy, she talked about how she was 9 months pregnant when she was offered the role and her baby was only 3 months old when she started filming.
“It’s been a journey, so this really means a lot to me,” she said. “Thank you audience. It’s all up to you. Thank you for letting Sylvie into your imagination.”
Daniel Radcliffe won Best Villain for his role as a billionaire in the adventure comedy “The Lost City”.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was able to win several titles as the show’s top nomination with seven. With nearly $1.9 billion in gross at the box office, the film was the biggest movie of the year and a fan favorite, though it went largely unnoticed by the major awards ceremonies.
MTV’s Celebration of Movies and TV is a lighter, softer awards show hosted by Vanessa Hudgens.
To receive the title of Comic Genius, Black ran across the stage and almost died before giving his acceptance speech.
“I need some oxygen,” he said before cutting out some of the movies he’s starred in, like “School of Rock” and “Jumanji.”
“Comic genius. Are you kidding? For what?” Black said. “I don’t deserve this, but I’ll take it.”
Lopez will be honored with this year’s recipient of the Generation Award, which honors actors whose diverse contributions in both film and television have made them household names.
HBO’s “Euphoria” has six nominations while “The Batman” has four. In total, 26 awards will be given out in sexist categories during the two-hour screening.
This year, the show added awards for best song and “Here for the Hookup.”
Diplo and Swae Lee performed “Tupelo Shuffle” in director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic “Elvis”.
The ceremony is returning to live form after being pre-recorded for several years.
