For those wondering why Naomi Osaka dropped out of the Australian Open, or if she’s still interested in becoming a professional tennis player, you’ve just got the answer.

Osaka tweeted a statement on Wednesday announcing that she will be stepping away from tennis for the entire 2023 season. In the statement, she mentioned that the past few years have been challenging, but she is learning from it and plans to return to the 2024 Australian Open.

Also, she is pregnant.

When it was announced on Saturday that she would not be competing in the first major tennis tournament of the 2023 season, the speculation machine began to smoke with all the questions raised about Osaka. Is she still interested in tennis? Is she only interested in popularity? What exactly are her mental health struggles? Can she regain her status as the best player in the world?

I could take this moment to give a presentation about combating wild speculation about what’s going on in the lives of athletes and other celebrities. The decisions they make are none of our business unless they go to jail for harming others.

But we all know that is not realistic. While Osaka did not owe us an explanation on why she elected not to play, she is famous. She is far more than just a professional tennis player. Osaka is one of the most well-known athletes in the entire world. A true A-list celebrity. Naturally, we are going to be curious about why she isn’t playing.

Anything that she says and does can, and will be used against her in the court of public opinion. She was the highest-paid female athlete in the world in 2022, even though she had a rough season. Osaka lost early in the Australian Open, French Open, and U.S. Open. She didn’t even take the court during Wimbledon due to an Achilles injury.

All of her on-court struggles in 2022 resulted in people letting their imaginations run wild on why she elected not to play in the first major tournament of the season. All of that is coming after a year in which she revealed that she was dealing with some mental health struggles that resulted in her withdraw from the 2021 French Open. Many questioned how much she still cares about playing tennis, and some have gone. too far in the harshness of their criticism.

In an ideal world, everyone would get news about Osaka not playing at face value. They will express their disappointment that another star player has dropped out of the first main game of the season – Venus Williams and Carlos Alcaraz are also out of action – and let it be. If they have questions, they can wait a few days and then get an honest answer from Osaka explains quite clearly why she won’t play.

Unfortunately, that’s not how sports work. The more popular an athlete is, the more scrutinized every move that athlete makes, and the quicker fame will come. Social media accounts — both real and bot — start working right away. Then come blog posts, participate in debate programs and then columnists.

There is no way to slow down the speculator once it starts working. Give it a star and a bit of news answering who, what, and where, but does not provide how and why, and the machine can run all day. It doesn’t run on electricity, it runs on curiosity.

It would be great if we let Osaka inform us Why doesn’t she take part in the first major tournament of the tennis season on her own time. In polite society, that would really be the right course of action.

But that is not natural. So let’s try not to make sense about it.
