NBA, NHL games postponed due to Covid-19 protocol


Sports teams and their players have not been spared – and Monday saw a number of announcements connected to the protocols each league has established for competitors and staff.

With 10 additional players and staff members within the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the league has postponed two upcoming Chicago Bulls games.

This is the first time this season that NBA games have been postponed due to concerns about Covid-19.

Players in the protocol must either quarantine for 10 days or have two negative tests in a 24-hour period.

The Bulls will play host Detroit Pistons on Tuesday and will then travel to Toronto to face the Raptors on Thursday.

Tickets for Tuesday’s game will be valid for the match when it is rescheduled, team officials said.

No makeup date has been announced.

A federation source told CNN last week that 97 percent of NBA players are vaccinated, with 60 percent of eligible players having received a booster shot. There are about 500 players on 30 lists.

No major professional sports federation in the United States requires its players to be vaccinated.

While the Bulls were the first team to have the game move, several star players were sidelined when named on the protocol list, including LeBron James, who missed a game late last month.

NHL sees third team affected

The Calgary Flames have postponed at least their next three games after the NHL announced on Monday six players and one staff member had joined the league’s Covid protocol over a 24-hour period.

NHL officials said there is concern about the virus continuing to spread throughout the team with warnings of “potentially more positive cases in the coming days.”

The Ottawa Senators announced on November 15 that they would be closing their training facility and postponing three games when at least 10 players are on the NHL’s Covid-19 protocol.

In late November, the New York Islanders had two games postponed due to multiplayer in the Covid protocol.

Flames facilities have been closed indefinitely. The affected games have yet to be rescheduled.

NFL wants to increase staff after Christmas

In the NFL, where the outbreak of Covid-19 may lead to loss of money, the federation sent a memo Monday that Level 1 and Level 2 personnel who have been previously immunized and are eligible under CDC guidelines must receive a booster shot no later than December 27.

Level 1 and Level 2 staff are coaches and anyone who has direct contact with players. This mandate does not apply to NFL players.

A federation source told CNN there have been 37 positive tests for coronavirus from players. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report that number.

The most recently publicly released testing data from the NFL shows 29 positive tests from players between November 14 and 27.
