NBA reacts to Kyle Rittenhouse’s verdict

Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on Friday of all charges after pleading himself in his own defense at his murder trial in Kenosha, Wis.

After three and a half days of deliberation, the jury reached a verdict of not guilty on all counts. Rittenhouse has been charged with murder, attempted murder and reckless endangerment of safety after killing two men and wounding another with an AR-15 rifle. The shooting occurred amid protests against police violence against Blacks during the summer of 2020.

If convicted, he will face life in prison.

Following the news that Rittenhouse was acquitted, James Cadogan, executive director of the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, released a statement.

“Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy. The right to protest peacefully is a cornerstone of our democracy and the Basketball Social Justice Coalition. The nation remains committed to protecting that right for all. It is unacceptable to society,” Cadogan said.

NBA players and coaches reacted to the ruling throughout the evening.

Nets Coach Steve Nash

“These situations are disappointing. It’s important not to become dismayed and let people continue to fight for the kind of justice and equality that serves all.”

Caron Butler

“Today’s ruling in Kyle Rittenhouse’s trial reflects the unusual racial prejudice that pervades the US criminal justice system. It’s also a rare look at white privilege at work. impact on prosecution, conviction and punishment – a fact that is rarely revealed publicly.”

Warriors Coach Steve Kerr

“This is America. And we are treading a dangerous path.”
