NBA Rumors: “This Summer’s Big Drama Is About Zion’s Contracts”

New Orleans Pelicans Super star Zion WilliamsonThe future of the franchise has been the subject of intense conversations around the NBA world. It will be something to keep an eye on this summer.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Pelicans’ front office isn’t necessarily interested in giving Williamson a maximum five-year extension this summer. His propensity for injury has been evident throughout his brief career thus far. Windhorst says:

“This summer’s big drama is about Zion’s contract. At the end of the season, when speaking to the media, he said that he would happily sign the extension when it lays in front of him. But things are not simple. His situation will be to sign a guaranteed maximum contract of 5 years.”

Windhorst continued:

“But from what I’ve been told, the Pelicans at this point aren’t willing to offer a five-year guarantee. And a lot of that is flowing down from ownership. They’re going to offer you.” We have a great deal, but won’t guarantee all of that.

“If Zion accepts those terms and still defends himself and can get $100 million plus a guarantee, he signs it and everything is fine. If he doesn’t sign and wants the whole thing. [contract] Guaranteed, we might have some drama in the fall. “

Williamson, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft, missed the whole season. He missed almost his entire rookie season (24 games) because of a knee injury.

The New Orleans Pelicans have had a tumultuous season. They started 3-16 under freshman coach Willie Green the month after it was announced Williamson had had foot surgery. But the franchise has always insisted on making it to the knockout stages, even without Williamson.

Buying CJ McCollum from the Portland Trail Blazers on the mid-February trade deadline underscored that point. After coming in at 36-46 at the end of January, New Orleans led 18-14 for the rest of the season.

The Pels then won two play-in games. Then they took Phoenix Sunsthe NBA’s best performer, to six games in the first round of the Western Conference knockouts.

When Williamson was well again, he was with Brandon Ingram and McCollum, likely to lead the Pelicans deep into the post-season. Williamson is an All-Star, averaging 27.0 points per game, in a healthy season of his career (last season).

Of those three, the New Orleans Pelicans will have players who can grab the bucket at will. Williamson will always attract doubles teams as his game is predicted based on his ability in the arc. When the defense collapses on him, he can give it to the opener in McCollum or Ingram.

However, the current needs of both Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans are for him to stay healthy and stay healthy. The future of the franchise is basically predicted based on Williamson’s health.
