NCA Project: Former Pacers Lakshmipathy Balaji, Ranganath Vinay, Pankaj Singh Do Internship Under Cooley

Bidding to create a team of quality bowling coaches, the NCA recently had an internship program where well-known names like Lakshmipathy BalajiRanganath Vinay Kumar and Pankaj Singh upgraded their coaching skills under the guidance of Ashes Award-winning mentor Troy Cooley. Cooley has been the quick bowling coach of both the Australian and British men’s teams at different times. Head of NCA VVS Laxmanwho is preparing a roadmap for the country’s Gen-Next cricketers, has informed BCCI bosses of the need for more quality bowling coaches and, therefore, some doyens in country, who have also played for India, earned the win under the tutelage of Cooley.

Lessons include current level 2 coaches such as CSK bowling coach Balaji, Vinay (MI scout) who is being considered as one of the best tactical trainers along with legend Rajasthan Pankaj Singh, Avishkar Salvi of Mumbai, head coach of the Kerala state team Tinu Yohanan and Karnataka swimmer Srinath Aravind.

All six have played for India and Balaji also made a name for himself before injury cut his international career off.

It is understood that the NCA wants to select coaches who have had a distinguished first-class career, if not internationally, and are more familiar with the changing aspects of cricket coaching at the elite level.

So what exactly is Cooley’s coaching mantra? “His (Cooley) coach’s way of coaching is very different from what we see in India. He believes that coaches should not seek out the natural strength of any bowler. keep a close eye on speaking sessions with PTI.

But how can a coach get him to beat an exceptional athlete that doesn’t come naturally to him? “What I’ve learned from Cooley’s method is that he would ask the pitcher to try and beat the best player. Learn by doing rather than teaching him technique.

“Suppose if he can take the ball away from the hitter, then ask him what he did? In coaching the term ‘why’ is very important. Every player has to ask himself ‘why’ he does certain things and the coach. has to instill that habit in their wards,” said the former first-class player.

In this quest to find the ‘why’, the player will realize that maybe his wrist position is not correct or that his left shoulder (for the right arm smasher) is opening too much .

When a player can determine that his or her wrist or shoulder position is not perfect, the coach begins the game.

It could be advice to him to close his shoulders first, or maybe change the semi-open landing to a more inclined landing.

Coaches will ask questions and students will have to answer, and that’s how you come up with solutions.

“Cooley believes that the solution is always in the individual, and it’s the job of a coach to help him discover it. Because those who try to find the answer on their own will never forget that solution.” the aspiring coach added.

The 18-ball ‘test’ for ’emerging’ camp pitchers While Level 2 coaches practice under Cooley as part of the module, young coaches must also see how Australians did a SWOT analysis of pitchers (mostly speed athletes) who were there as part of an “emerging camp (19-23 years)” of the NCA.

For all the fast pitchers, Cooley set up three simultaneous nets in which they had to throw six balls each.

“One net has a rope held at a height of 1 m from the crease, which is the length of the Yorker. In the second net, two ropes are held with a length of 6-8 meters, this is the area for hard length of bowling.

“The third net has a rope held at a height of 10 meters and simply digs it short. For the spinner, there is only a net with the rope held to a length of about 4 meters.” The idea was to find how a young player could hit a particular length consistently whether it was a player, long ball or short ball, and accordingly, create a database for each pitcher. and let them know what they can do, what they are capable of doing and, last but not least, what is expected of them.
