NeoCov A Mutant Variant That Doesn’t Infect Humans


According to scientists from Wuhan University, China, NeoCov can enter human cells in a similar way to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“It’s just one more mutation that could become dangerous to humans,” the researchers said in a paper published on the bioRxiv website, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

NeoCoV has been detected in bats in South Africa and so far has only been known to be capable of spreading between these animals.

MERS-CoV and some bat coronaviruses use ‘DPP4’ as their functional receptor.

However, the receptor for NeoCoV, the closest relative of MERS-CoV has not been detected in bats, remains “mysterious”.

In the study, the researchers unexpectedly discovered that NeoCoV and its close relative, PDF-2180-CoV, can effectively utilize certain types of bat Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and ACE2. of humans to enter the body.

“NeoCoV efficiently infects human ACE2-expressing cells after mutating T510F on the receptor-binding motif (RBM). Notably, infection cannot be cross-neutralized by antibodies targeting target SARS-CoV-2 or MERS-CoV,” the study found.

This means that neither antibodies nor protein molecules produced by people with respiratory illnesses or those who are fully vaccinated against NeoCoV.

The study demonstrated the first use of ACE2 in MERS-related viruses, shedding light on the potential biosafety threat of emerging humans ACE2 administered ‘MERS-CoV-2’ against both high mortality and transmission rates.

Related to the MERS-CoV virus, the virus was discovered during outbreaks in Middle Eastern countries in 2012 and 2015 and is similar to SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid in humans.

Its effects on humans are still uncertain.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), whether the NeoCov virus poses a threat to humans requires further research.

The WHO said it was “working closely” with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to “monitor and respond to threats”. Threats from animals are emerging viruses.”

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic that originated in Wuhan, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19, has mutated and resulted in different variants of the virus, including the latest Omicron.

The Delta strain is considered the most contagious form of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus to date.
