Netflix’s ‘Tiger King’ Producers Oppose Use of ‘Ace Ventura 2’ Clip – The Hollywood Reporter

Morgan Creek Productions sued Netflix and its producers Tiger King copyright infringement for the use of Ace Ventura 2 clips in the hit reality series.

The show, which became a hit upon its release in March 2020, centers on Joseph Maldonado Passage, aka “Joe Exotic,” the owner of a “big cat” zoo.

“The film is filled with bad stories about animal abuse, giant guns and an outrageous bid for the presidency of the United States,” the lawsuit against Netflix and Goode Films reads. Most notably, the show follows a murder-for-hire plot targeting a competing animal sanctuary owner, hated by Joe Exotic and seen as a threat to the ‘big cat’ empire. his.” That person is Carole Baskin, and Joe Exotic is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence.

The lawsuit claims that the show used two clips of Ace Venture 2 features star Jim Carrey “without permission or license.” One such clip featured Carrey with “the monkey wrapped around his neck and shoulders” and another “riding an elephant to victory”.

The lawsuit states that the two clips, totaling five seconds on screen, were featured in one Tiger King sequence in which animals including tigers, leopards, monkeys and great apes are introduced.

“Without a doubt, a voiceover identifies a film like Ace Ventura, at the exact moment when the Infringing Footage appeared on screen,” the lawsuit states. “Plantiff was informed and believed, and then alleged that Ace Ventura was the only film used in Tiger King where more than one clip appeared.”

Morgan Creek alleges that the episode was watched by “a truly audience of millions – many of them more than once, multiplying harm to the MCP – all knowing or having a reason to know.” use of the Clips infringes without permission, content or license. ”

It also states that “two humorous scenes” are intended to “enhance the commercial value of Tiger King“By showing that wild animals are commonly used in film and television productions; adding “charming” to the episode, helping to increase viewership; and implies that the people behind Ace Ventura 2 has “advertised” Tiger King smoothly. ”

Morgan Creek, which said it had attempted to resolve the dispute before filing the lawsuit, to no avail, is seeking statutory damages along with attorneys’ fees and asking the defendants to be permanently barred from using use any clips owned by Morgan Creek.
