Nets and Lakers ‘actively engaged’ in Irving-Westbrook trade talks

The brooklyn network is said to be discussing a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers that would see stars Kyrie Irving and Russell Westbrook swap.

Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports that the negotiations between the Nets and the Lakers are “actively engaged.”

Haynes added that there is optimism that a deal can be reached. However, the Nets want to put keeper Joe Harris in the trade, while the Lakers prefer Seth Curry.

Harris has $38.6 million remaining on his contract, which expires after the 2023-24 season. Meanwhile, Curry has a year left on his current contract; he will do $8.4 million in 2022-23.

Rumors that Irving is interested in playing in Los Angeles emerged after the seven-time All-Star team failed to find common ground about a future with the Nets.

On Monday, Irving decided to opt in to his $37 million player option for next season, seemingly to stave off any trading speculation. Even so, rumors linking Irving to the Lakers resurfaced on Thursday. Brian Windhorst of ESPN report mutual interests between the two sides and “senior people” believe that an agreement is not worth discussing.

Westbrook also do exercise his player selection for next season, receiving a salary of $47.1 million in 2022-23.
