New link between antioxidant levels and dementia risk

One study found that people with higher blood levels of this antioxidant had a lower risk of developing dementia decades later than those with lower antioxidant levels.

“Expanding people’s cognitive function is an important public health challenge,” said study author May A. Beydoun, PhD, MPH, of the National Institutes of Aging at the National Institutes of Health. in Baltimore, Maryland, said. “Antioxidants may help protect the brain from oxidative stress, which can cause cell damage. Further studies are needed to examine whether supplementing with these antioxidants can help protect the brain.” from dementia or not.”

Research studies on the presence of dementia

The study involved 7,283 people who were at least 45 years old at the start of the study. They underwent a physical examination, an interview, and blood tests to measure antioxidant levels at the start of the study. They were then followed for an average of 16 years to see who had developed dementia.

Participants were divided into three groups based on their blood antioxidant levels. People with higher levels of lutein and zeaxanthin were less likely to develop dementia than others. For each standard deviation increase in lutein and zeaxanthin levels, approximately 15.4 micromol/liter, the participants’ risk of developing dementia decreased by 7%. The association was even stronger for beta-cryptoxanthin; Each standard deviation increase in levels, about 8.6 micromol/liter, was associated with a 14% reduction in dementia risk.

“It is important to note that the impact of these antioxidants on dementia risk was somewhat reduced when we took into account other factors such as education, income and physical activity, so maybe those factors could help explain the relationship between antioxidant levels and dementia,” says Beydoun.

The limitation of the research that has been done is that antioxidant levels are based on only one measurement of blood levels and may not reflect levels in people over their lifetime.
