New Local Comics – Raina and Mancini .’s NUTZ
The Manchester (Conn) Journal Inquirer introduced a new comic series today.
For 20 years, Bob Raina, a resident of Somers, had the idea of making a comic book series. With Mark Mancini, he’s fulfilled a longtime dream with his movie “Nutz,” which premieres today in the Journal Inquirer. Strips will be a weekly feature.
He has also illustrated the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series and released an illustrated children’s book, “There’s a monster in my stomach”.
“I found myself stuck in a place where I couldn’t get a part-time job,” he said. “My wife is a teacher. It was a struggle, but we made it through. It gave me more time to revisit art I hadn’t done in years. “
Inspired by comic strips from his youth as a paperboy, he says, like “Peanuts,” “Garfield” and “Mother Goose and Grimm,” he created Squirrel.
“People assume his name is Nutz,” says Raina. “It’s the Squirrel. No name. “
Squirrel’s sidekick, though, has a name.
“Acorn Cornelius, “Corny” for short,” says Raina. “It’s a funny name.
“Bob called me one day and asked if I wanted to join,” says co-author Mancini, a part-time JI sports officer. “He is very talented. I salute here and there. He’s very generous in making it sound 50/50, but he’s the man behind it. I try to put as much humor into it as I can. “
For now, “Nutz” is slated to come out as a weekly comic, but Raina said he hopes one day he will have enough time and ideas to make it a daily, and eventually, If readers receptive, let’s become a collaborative strip.
