New look, better range prediction

A decade to a month after Model S received Tesla’s first over-the-air firmware updateSuch updates to electric vehicles are increasingly becoming the norm — as a way to improve the product after it reaches consumers.

One such vehicle in the age of “software-defined media,” Lucid, this morning announced the biggest step forward in its own over-the-air updates. Called UX 2.0, it overhauls several interfaces and brings “dozens of new features” to everyone Lucid Airaccording to the California company.

Lucid says that the updates expand the improvements to include “virtually every user touchpoint in the car,” including a redesigned layout for screen space, and emphasizes that many of the improvements in software releases come from owner feedback and ideas.

“Thanks to our integrated hardware and software engineering, Lucid has the in-house engineering expertise to enhance our vehicles after they leave the assembly line,” Chief Technical Officer the company’s senior number, said Michael Bell.

Many major changes apply to Lucid Air’s Glass cockpit display and pilot panel. Now, both are “instant on,” meaning you don’t need to wait for them to start up. Glass Cockpit — Lucid’s fancy term for the instrument panel space — has repositioned the navigation instructions to appear directly in front of the driver, while the map has been updated. Alexa voice control now applies to the rear climate setting and third-party apps have a “more user-friendly browsing experience”.

Lucid also added a Highway support active lane centering, along with adaptive cruise control.

And especially for those who plan to use most of the air EPA driving range up to 520 miles: According to Lucid, the Air gets a smarter prediction of the remaining range.

Micro-lens array highlights now affect light sources other than other mediums, switching to low-beam whenever deemed most appropriate; and the system consults the sensors to automatically balance the headlights.

Air is also now locked, and unlocking is said to be simpler, more intuitive, and more responsive. It also includes a De-icing Mode that combines defrost, wiper blade movements, and wiper fluid “to clear ice that could obstruct vision through the windshield.”

A screen in the accompanying image suggests that the update time could be closer to an hour, so owners will need to make sure they have enough time to update.

Lucid says that UX 2.0, which is free, has already begun rolling out to customer cars, in the early stages, with the cars continuing to go on sale over the next few weeks.
