(Reuters) – After a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day parade returned in person on Thursday, with crowds gathering in antique marchers dancing emerald green as they took to the streets. Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.

Rain and gray skies didn’t stop those enjoying themselves.

“It’s the best thing for New York,” said local resident Patrick Delaney. “It was just what we needed, a shot to the arm to take our focus away, to lift our spirits.”

Marching bands playing bagpipes, performers and politicians all walked to celebrate Ireland’s heritage, along with members of the New York City Fire and Police Department.

The parade pauses at noon and turns South toward Ground Zero for a moment of silence to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center.

“It’s been a great day,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, adding that she was delighted “to be an honorary Irishman.”

The parade, which began at 44th Street on Fifth Avenue, drew visitors from abroad and from across the United States.

“We came from Ireland to celebrate, to see the parade here, we’ve seen a lot of it,” Laura Taeny said. “We haven’t been able to attend a parade for two years, so we’re excited to be here.”

Others come from closer to home.

Justine Pacheco from Nassau County, New York said: “After two years without this, it’s great to be back.
