New York firefighters arrive in Mayfield to help clear debris | News


MAYFIELD, KY– Many of you have volunteered your time and resources to help with the cleanup efforts in Mayfield. It’s been almost two weeks since the tornado hit, and all the people cleaning up are ready on deck. Four New York firefighters even joined in to help with the effort.

Fires & Drums in New York had heard the news about the tornado, seen the photos on Facebook, but wanted to see it with their own eyes. And help in any way they can.

Abraham’s house in Mayfield is not much left. He is trying to make it livable again for his family, but his hands are getting tired. With help from some firefighters, he won’t have to do it alone.

“Just pull up and say we have a group of four men who can fit and we can do anything,” said Robert Tolley.

“It’s really been a heartfelt story for all of us in New York about what’s happened to these poor people. We want to come down and help in any way we can,” Tolley said.

They don’t mind getting their gloves dirty. From setting up the plywood to tearing off the shell, they are happy to help.

Tolley said: “I see license plates from all over the country with workers and vehicles coming in to help. It’s really amazing, and I think it shows the best of our country. me,” Tolley said.

Neighbors help neighbors – even if they live 1,000 miles apart. As people continue to clean up efforts, trash is pushed to the edge of the road for collection, which will be picked up after Christmas. Household scavenging has been halted, leaving many with no way to get rid of it.

The City of Mayfield has set up 14 dedicated bins for household items such as paper, cardboard boxes, food waste and trash. The mayor, Kathy O’Nan, says this is one step closer to getting back to normal.
