Professor Alain Fischer, France’s top vaccine strategist, told lawmakers on Wednesday that the Covid-19 situation in the country could allow the country’s vaccine to be phased out by the end of March.

Fischer said that to deregulate the vaccine, France would need “10 or 20 times less disease rates than it is today” and that hospitals could no longer be overwhelmed.

That could change quickly, said Fischer, president of the French vaccine strategy advisory council. “We’ll be there in late March, early April.”

France’s vaccine law requires people to have proof of adequate vaccinations to access many daily activities, such as visits to restaurants and bars, as well as long-distance public transport between regions.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday regarding the Covid-19 situation, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said, “The situation improves in the immediate future and allows us to look ahead with optimism. certain.”

“The hospital situation has started to improve,” said Attal, adding that the removal of the vaccine tag could also be followed by new regulations on mask wearing. Currently, masks are required in all indoor public spaces in France, including on public transport.

More background information: As of Tuesday, there were more than 33,000 Covid-19-related hospitalizations in France, compared with fewer than 7,000 at the beginning of November, ahead of France’s 5th coronavirus wave, according to Public Health France.

France recorded 235,267 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, according to the latest data from Public Health France. The number of cases has been steadily declining since an all-time high of more than 500,000 cases on January 25.

Attal said that the National Health Council will issue new advice on Thursday regarding Covid-19 regulations in schools, which he expects will move towards easing the rules, including wearing masks and checking contacts.
