NFL OT rules could be changed, but 24 votes ‘not easy to get’


After the Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime playoff win over the Buffalo Bills this past January, which saw Kansas City score a goal of only attacking possession in extra time, the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles have proposed output a change to NFL Overtime Rules that will ensure both teams will take ownership before moving to sudden death mode. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans proposed a rule that would allow a team that scored the goal in extra time first to win the game by successfully converting the attempt to two points.

Three-quarters of owners must vote in favor of such a rule change. Each Kevin Seifert of ESPN, NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay said Friday there is “a lot of momentum” to change the way overtime games are won and lost but added that he isn’t necessarily optimistic about the game. something will be accomplished this season.

“I think my history on this rule tells me that 24 votes isn’t easy to get,” McKay explains. “But I think the statistics fully warrant an examination of whether the overtime rules need further revision.”

Seifert notes that seven of the 12 post-season overtime competitions have been won at the opening of possession under current rules since they were accepted prior to the 2012 campaign. Ten of those 12 games. was won by whichever team won the overtime coin toss.
