Nick Saban credits media for ‘tasty’ rat poison after Alabama vs. Georgia

No. 3 Alabama beat No. 1 Georgia 41-24 in Saturday’s SEC championship match, a result few expected.

Even less expected: Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban uttered the word “delicious” after the Crimson Tide’s win over the Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The esteemed coach popped up in one of his most famous comments after Saturday’s win, thanking the media for the rat poison it supplied to Alabama before the SEC title match. Saban admits that, most of the time, his team receives winged praise. But this rat poison is merely the impetus for a team that is considered to shoot long distance, at most to beat the highest ranked Bulldogs.

“You guys gave us a lot of really aggressive rat poison,” Saban told reporters after the game. “The rat poison you usually give us is usually deadly. But the rat poison you put in there this week… is delicious. “

Here’s Saban’s comment, in all of its uncanny glory:

Saban’s comment was, of course, a response to his 2017 post-game press conference following Alabama’s 27-19 win over Texas A&M. Saban said at the time:

“I’m trying to get our players to listen to me instead of you (the media),” Saban said. “All the stuff you write about how good we are, all the stuff they hear on ESPN, it’s like poison. It’s like drinking poison. It’s like rat poison.”

Listen to Saban reverse his stance on “rat poison” in the media – which has become something of a college football meme since he blasted the phrase back in 2017 – somewhat unusual. Then again, this Alabama team isn’t like his previous teams, even with a 12-1 record and SEC championship. The Crimson Tide wasn’t nearly as dominant as some of their previous iterations, losing to Texas A&M and closing calls to Florida, Arkansas, LSU and Auburn.

Indeed, Saban’s team was also considered the underdog for the first time in 93 games. (Coincidentally, the last time the Crimson Tide was out of favor in a game was in 2015, when Georgia was favored with 2.5 points after Alabama’s loss to Ole Miss.) That is clearly a motivating factor for Alabama, which often tries to block out what Saban perceives as “noise” outside.

“We’ve probably had to go through more adversity and this team has suffered and is more resilient than most teams we’ve ever had,” said Saban.

“I’m really proud of them for that. The competitive personality they have. Last week at Auburn to come back to Auburn, come back and win. They went into this game nobody thought we had. a chance to win and really get on the pitch and perform well in the game against a really good team.”
