‘Nightmare fish’ washes up on California beach
TORONTO – A “nightmare fish” washed up on a beach in San Diego, California and was discovered last month by a man who thought it was a jellyfish.
“Football fish”, or deep-sea fish, have rows of sharp teeth and bioluminescent lures that hang from their heads to attract prey.
This species usually lives at depths of hundreds of meters under the ocean, where sunlight cannot penetrate. Because it lives so far underwater, it is rarely seen by humans.
