Nissan Fairlady X SUV: Japanese students surpass Murano by Z

NISSAN previously flirted with the idea of applying letter Z brand for a crossover, but it never really went ahead and performed properly.

While it’s still not a real production car, the Fairlady X is the closest thing.

Developed by students at Nissan Automotive Technical College (NATS) in Kyoto, Fairlady is what happens when you combine the letter Z with the letter Murano.

“We are students at Nissan Kyoto Automobile University. This is a vehicle that we imagined and built with our own hands. It will be a medium to remake Murano and resemble Fairlady Z,” the students wrote on Twitter.

Those headlights and taillights have been removed from the Z, as have the grille and rear spoiler, but the Fairlady is much more than a nose transplant and butt lift. It has flat door handles from the GT-R, custom fenders and wide Rays wheels.

It’s still unclear which engine powers it, but the Murano is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6.

Z is equipped with a version of the 3.0 liter VR30DDTT twin-turbo engine from the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, generating 298kW and 475Nm.

The Fairlady X will be on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January.

This is one of two projects that the NATS team is working on. According to the automaker’s social media, the other is a hybrid between the Nissan Fairlady roadster and the second-generation Nissan March.
