Nissan issues second recall notice for pickup truck rollover risk

Nissan expanding it advance withdrawal newer Titan and Border pickup trucks from just over 180,000 to 203,223 total vehicles from the years 2020-2022. Due to a manufacturing defect, these truck may roll away when parked even if the transmission is properly set in “park”. Nissan continues to warn customers to be sure to use their parking lot brake until a final remedy can be determined.

As reported by Nissan for NHTSA, the problem seems to stem from loose tolerances in the manufacture of drive components. The parking pin (the tab that locks the car in place when “park” is selected on the transmission) is supposed to get caught in other components in the transmission, making it impossible to engage fully. If the pawn does not fully engage its collector, the truck will not be locked in place.

The investigation to date indicates that the resistance between the parking bar and the wedge inside the transmission can prevent movement of the wedge and the parking pin. “If the parking latch fails, an affected vehicle may move after placing the shift lever in ‘Park.’ If the parking latch fails, an affected vehicle may move after put the gear lever in ‘Park.’ If the customer does not apply the parking brake, the vehicle’s mobility increases the risk of injury or collision.”

Nissan said at least one truck in a factory shipment rolled while parked due to the defect. In a factory inspection carried out in August, more than 10% of trucks inspected (11 out of 83) showed problems with parker engagement. Nissan then ordered a halt to pickup trucks leaving its factory until remedial action was taken. No fixes have been developed yet.
