Nor’easter bomb cyclone: Northeast faces sub-freezing temperatures as it recovers from record-breaking weekend blizzard
Governor Karyn Polito, Governor of Massachusetts, said Sunday that shelters and heating centers have been set up in the area for people who are without electricity and want to escape extreme conditions. Highs across New England are expected to stay below freezing on Monday.
Calendar records broken in many cities
Several snowfall records were broken Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, as the storm swept across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Atlantic City, New Jersey, recorded 14 inches of snow, breaking the old record for a calendar day of 7.3 inches set in 2014. The city’s monthly total is now 33.2 inches, far ahead The previous 20.3-inch monthly mark was set in January 1987.
Breaking the record set more than a century ago, Philadelphia recorded 5.8 inches of snow, the most ever recorded on January 29. The previous record of 5 inches was set in 1904.
The same storm in 1904 set a January 29 snowfall record for New York’s Central Park – which lasted until Saturday. The park recorded 7.3 inches of snow, eclipsing the previous record by more than 2 inches.
Boston experienced its heaviest snow day ever on the Saturday of January, with 24.5 inches of snow recorded.
New storms this week for eastern US
As the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic recovers, more rainfall will reach parts of the eastern US as a new storm is expected to extend from the Great Lakes to Texas on Wednesday and Wednesday. Five.
The storm’s northern end, which includes parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, could see widespread snowfall with more than a foot of accumulation, according to forecasts.
There may also be an ice sheet from the Ohio River Valley to the Southern Plains, with widespread ice accumulations of 1/2″-3/4″ of ice and isolated areas seen over 1″ of ice, lead to a serious power outage.
Strong lightning and heavy rain could hit the southern US. A total of 2-4 inches of widespread rainfall is possible over much of the South, with isolated rainfall possibly up to 6 inches in parts of Texas.
