Notre Dame sisters donate to Ukraine


The Sisters of Notre Dame in Omaha can’t get to Europe safely to help their sisters, so they’re raising money online Monday to support their congregation abroad. “And the same is true in Slovakia, where we have sisters, and also in Germany,” Margaret Hickey said of the fundraiser. In her office, church emails remain intact for decades.

Notre Dame sisters will send alms and donations from Monday’s online fundraiser to their headquarters in the Czech Republic.

Ukrainian flags are decorated throughout the school campus. Mary Ann Zimmer sews them in her room because she can’t turn off a flag like the television.

She said that one cannot turn off one’s feelings about the conflict.

“It’s all on television, it’s easy to just turn it off because it’s so horrible,” Sister Zimmer says.

United by their faith, the sisters once again continue to support each other from all over the world.

“What I see in front of volunteers is a sense of joy when they can reach out to refugees,” says Hickey. “Whenever I have a conflict, I try to find the gift in it.”
