Novavax jab triggers an immune response to Omicron

According to preliminary data released by the drug’s manufacturer on Wednesday, the Novavax Covid-19 vaccine appears to induce an effective immune response against the Omicron variant.

Vaccines, approved by World Health Organization and in the EU, Philippines and Indonesia, stored at normal refrigerator temperature. It could prove significantly helpful for the Covax vaccine outreach programme, which has ordered 1.1 billion doses, carried out in partnership with the Serum Institute of India.

Novavax said initial data from booster and adolescent studies showed “broad cross-reactivity” for Omicron and other circulating variants from two injections, and responses increased with the second dose. three six months later. In trials, injections have shown up to 90.4% effectiveness.

The results show “that [the vaccine] said Gregory M Glenn, president of the company’s research and development division.

He added that it “may be necessary” to develop an Omicron-targeted vaccine based on the “continuous evolution” of the virus, with production expected to begin in January.

Other studies have shown that an mRNA enhancer can significantly increase the antibody response against Omicron compared to the response seen after two injections. Some countries have accelerated their booster programs in an effort to stop the spread of Omicron, although it is still unclear how the antibody response translates to effectiveness.

While Novavax executives told investors it was difficult to compare immune responses to those produced by other vaccines by different trials, Stanley Erck, director of The company’s chief executive officer, said the data was “another demonstration of the power of our technology platform”.

Shares jumped 6% after markets closed in New York after closing 4% lower.

Novavax footage is based on protein. The drug is given in two doses 21 days apart and is stored at normal refrigerator temperature. Health authorities have expressed hope their more traditional technology could work to convince people who are hesitant to get vaccinated.

The UK, US and Europe have placed orders for doses of 60m, 110m and up to 200m, respectively.
