Nunavut Council to choose prime minister, cabinet in secret ballot
IQALUIT – Newly elected members of the Nunavut legislative assembly will choose on Wednesday who will lead the territory’s next government.
They will use secret ballot to choose a prime minister, a speaker and nine members for the cabinet – which is expected to take a full day.
There is no party or political background in Nunavut consensus-style government.
Each member interested in a position will be given time to speak and those who are not running will be able to ask questions.
The selected Prime Minister will then designate the cabinet category for the members selected as ministers.
The current Prime Minister of Nunavut, Joe Savikataaq said he will put his name back on.
Nunavut elections are held on October 25.
