One & Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius – Full house?

It is 4 pm now. We’re driving up a stretch of road in the northeast of the island to get from our previous hotel One & Only Le Saint Geran. I turned my head to every majestic whitewashed and palm-fringed resort we passed but quickly realized how silly it was to think One and Only would be caught between two towering estates. sharp. Only until we reached the end of the stretch, stopped by a cast iron gate with two large golden letters; “OO” etched into it, that I knew we had arrived. Welcoming security brought us into One & Only’s private oasis; a cut outcrop of the Island of Mauritius surrounded by water like a moat protecting its castle.

Match the King and Queen…that is.

We pass the watersports section to our left, (I’m glad to know even free water skiing and motorsports all day – I’m not a cyclist) as well as “Tapasake”, their traditional but modern pan-Asian restaurant, is housed in an original thatched-roof building on the lagoon. The palm trees are growing as freely and abundantly as a random photo but not perfectly filtered and then the dedicated “Club One” to our right surprised me. Would One & Only appeal to a slightly older, perhaps less active clientele? That myth was quickly blown away from the first night we sipped G&T at the bar and bumped shoulders with neighboring guests on the dance floor (more on that later). Club One is complete with modern indoor and outdoor training facilities, pristine tennis and padel courts (the first Henri Leconte-designed courses on the entire island), a winding 9-hole mini golf course members and a kids’ club that your child will beg you to visit. Rich with a history of being the first luxury hotel to open on the island in 1975, the resort has just undergone a nine-month, £41 million renovation that is sure to ensure its success and its presence in Mauritius for hundreds of years to come. While I may not be able to answer what has changed, I can answer the question “what is now,” and it is a perfectly drawn work of art.

One of the well-dressed and polite doormen banged a giant bronze gong as we entered the foyer. The interior shines with ‘beautiful colonial architecture and impeccable precision. The tables were decorated with bouquets of flowers and I watched the smiling guests converse with the welcoming staff as if they had been friends for life – later on, they were likely to be. A man caught my eye; an aura almost like his father surrounds him. It was the General Manager, Charles de Foucauld, who quite frankly looked as if he had just stepped out of a boat photo session for Ralph Lauren.

The whole appearance set a very precise tone for our stay. While One & Only ticks every box when it comes to expectations of a luxury hotel – exquisite food, exceptional service, and beautiful rooms (the list goes on), it’s so much more. It’s the place where your grandparents took your parents when they were little, the place you remember so fondly as a child and now journey there every year with young couples and friends. Like you. It’s like a Patek Philippe – passed down through the generations but never loses its distinctive ‘tweak or edge. It is remarkable and special while also being recorded in history.

I am writing this review about One & Only Le Saint Géran which is different from my usual blogs because it To be difference. I can let the pictures speak for the beauty of the property; the enveloping golden unspoiled beach with buttery sand beneath your feet and the infinity pool so close to the ocean that all you need is the soundtrack of the natural waves. Many areas where you’ll find two sun loungers alone to soak up some privacy in the warm sunshine, and the restaurants are actually pretty awesome serving up the perfect morning coffee. But what I really want to overcome is the atmosphere – people – guests.

I have visited several truly exceptional hotels and resorts over the past few years. Take lots of ‘perfect’ Instagram photos and showcase how special the gift is. But there is something different about this place. Something that will keep me coming back again and again. The One & Only Le Saint Géran still breathing life after dinner has been cleared away; Its bars are bustling with young people, old people and everything interesting and exciting between couples and families living their best lives. Guests are happy and eager to chat and get to know each other like they’re calling themselves quality alone time. They love fitness, they love wine, delicious food like locally caught fish burgers and chips. There is little or no room for disappointment here and can honestly say I love this property.

Now let the images speak for the beautiful innovation at One & Only Le Saint Geran

The Ocean Balcony room features soft gray, blue and warm white furniture.

The heart of the hotel – Alfresco La Terrasse. Every night, guests come to sit and socialize around the bar area and watch the nightly live music and dance organized by the hotel. Breakfast is a breath of fresh air here (literally) with deck seating options right by the ocean and an impressive buffet and interaction with the chefs. Right next door is one of the new crown jewels during their renovation; L’Artisan. A socially inspired bakery serving healthy options as well as daily chocolates, pastries and select-n mixes for the sweet tooth!

Club One – extremely impressive kids and fitness club space, good enough for any detox and fitness session (I’m glad it didn’t), but a sight to behold really welcome to see such an investment going into health and fitness next to a luxury hotel. We are pleased to meet the famous coach, Bolko from Refueling concept and yoga instructor Imogen Harding During our stay, this only adds to the wellness service that O&O provides guests.

The spa has expanded with a renovation, complete with a tranquil pool, a dedicated Kérastase salon and treatments inspired by local Mauritian traditions.

Day: We stayed March 28-31, 2019. The weather was mostly fine – with light showers and relatively high humidity on hot days.

Tip: If you’re particular about noise levels at night, ask for your room to be away from the main restaurant, La Terrasse so the live music doesn’t disturb you.
