Ontario reports 481 new COVID-19 cases, 1 more death
Ontario is reporting 481 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, as the number of cases for the week continues to rise. The total number of provincial cases is now 608,206.
By comparison, last Tuesday saw 441 new cases and the previous Tuesday 331. All three Tuesdays had similar testing volumes in the 20,000 range.
Of the 481 new cases recorded, the data showed that 236 were unvaccinated, 18 were partially vaccinated, 189 were fully vaccinated and 38 had unknown vaccination status.
According to Tuesday’s report, 56 cases were recorded in Toronto, 41 cases in Ottawa, 33 cases in Simcoe-Muskoka, 31 cases in Peel Region. All other local public health units reported fewer than 30 new cases in the provincial report.
The death toll in the province rose to 9,938 as one more death was recorded.

Vaccinations, recovery, testing, 7 days average in Ontario
As of 8 p.m. Monday, 13,146 vaccines (4,765 for the first shot and 8,381 for the second) had been administered on the last day.
More than 11.1 million people were fully immunized with two doses, representing 85.6% of the eligible population (12 years of age and older). The first dose coverage rate was 88.8%.
Meanwhile, 593,454 Ontario residents are reported to have recovered from COVID-19, representing about 97% of known cases. The cases resolved increased 651 cases compared to the previous day.
Active cases in Ontario now stand at 4,814 – down from the previous day’s 4,985, but up from November 9 when it was at 3,533. At the height of the second coronavirus spike in January, active cases reached just above 30,000. In the third wave in April, active cases topped 43,000.
The seven-day average has now hit 579, up from last week when it was 492. A month ago, the seven-day average was around 400.
The government said 18,965 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. There are 13,685 tests currently under investigation.
The positivity of the test reached 2.5%. Last week, the test’s positivity was 3.1%.
Hospitalization in Ontario
Ontario reported 301 people in its general hospital wards with COVID-19 (up 163 from the previous day) with 139 patients in the intensive care unit (down two) and 112 patients in the intensive care unit. separate from ventilators (decreased by one).
During the third peak, the worst of the hospitalizations, the province had as many as 900 patients in ICUs with COVID and nearly 2,400 patients in general hospitals.
For general hospitals with COVID, 102 children were unvaccinated, 17 were partially vaccinated, and 73 were fully vaccinated. As for those in the ICU, 63 were unvaccinated while 4 were partially vaccinated and 19 were fully vaccinated.
Provincial officials note that this new dataset with immunization status for hospital admissions will grow and improve over time as more information is gathered. There may also be differences due to how and when information is collected for both.
