Ontario reports 711 new COVID-19 cases, highest one-day count in almost 2 months

Ontario is reporting 711 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the biggest increase in cases since September 24 when 727 cases were recorded. The total number of provincial cases is now 609,429.

By comparison, last Thursday saw 642 new cases and the previous Thursday 438. All three Thursdays saw similar testing volumes in the 30,000 range.

Of the 711 new cases recorded, the data shows that 322 are unvaccinated, 28 are partially vaccinated, 314 are fully vaccinated, and 47 have unknown vaccination status.

According to Thursday’s report, 74 cases were recorded in Toronto, 71 cases in Windsor-Essex, 67 cases in Simcoe-Muskoka, 42 cases in Ottawa, 40 cases in the Peel Region, 39 cases in the Region. York and 37 cases in Waterloo and KFLA. All other local public health units reported fewer than 35 new cases in the provincial report.

The death toll in the province rose to 9,955 as five more deaths were reported.

Vaccinations, recovery, testing, 7 days average in Ontario

As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, 13,862 vaccines (5,153 for the first shot and 8,709 for the second) had been administered on the last day.

More than 11.1 million people were fully immunized with two doses, representing 85.7% of the eligible population (12 years of age and older). The first dose coverage rate was 88.8%.

Meanwhile, 594,602 Ontario residents are reported to have recovered from COVID-19, representing about 97% of known cases. Cases resolved increased by 575 compared to the previous day.

Active cases in Ontario now stand at 4,872 – up from 4,741 the previous day and up from 11 November when it was at 4,269. At the height of the second coronavirus spike in January, active cases reached just above 30,000. In the third wave in April, active cases topped 43,000.

The seven-day average has now hit 597, up from last week when it was 532. A month ago, the seven-day average was around 400.

The government said 34,347 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. There are 12,480 tests currently under investigation.

The test positivity reached 2%. Last week, the test’s positivity was 2.1%.

Hospitalization in Ontario

Ontario reports 278 people in general hospital wards have been infected with COVID-19 (up four from the previous day) with 129 patients in the intensive care unit (down four) and 104 patients in the care unit specially by ventilator (reduced by four).

During the third peak, the worst of the hospitalizations, the province had up to 900 patients in ICUs with COVID and nearly 2,400 patients in general hospitals.

For the ward general hospitals with COVID, 90 were unvaccinated, 14 were partially immunized, and 72 were fully immunized. As for those in the ICU, 60 were unvaccinated while 4 were partially vaccinated and 17 were fully vaccinated.

Provincial officials note that this new dataset with immunization status for hospital admissions will grow and improve over time as more information is gathered. There may also be differences due to how and when information is collected for both.

• 54,295 people from 12 to 19 people – an increase of 49 cases.
• 228,512 people from 20 to 39 people – an increase of 202 cases.
• 170,343 people from 40 to 59 – an increase of 167 cases.
• 78,839 people from 60 to 79 – an increase of 104 cases.
• 26,444 people aged 80 and over – an increase of 37 cases.
• The province notes that not all cases have reported age or sex.
