Ontario reports more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the first time since late May

Ontario is reporting 1,031 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the first time the number has surpassed 1,000 in six months. The total number of provincial cases is now 621,260.

The last time there were more than a thousand cases was on May 30 when 1,033 new cases were recorded. The number of cases is also growing weekly. For comparison, last Friday had 927 new cases and the previous Friday had 793 cases.

Of the 1,031 new cases recorded, the figures show 504 unvaccinated, 27 partially vaccinated, 442 fully vaccinated, and 58 with unknown vaccination status.

According to Friday’s report, 133 cases were recorded in Toronto, 106 in Simcoe Muskoka, 68 in Windsor, 60 in Peel Region, 59 in Sudbury, 58 in Ottawa and 56 in York Region . All other local public health units reported fewer than 50 new cases in the provincial report.

The death toll in the province rose to 10,016 as four more deaths were reported.

Vaccinations, recovery, testing, 7 days average in Ontario

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, more than 11.2 million people had been fully immunized with two doses, which is 87.2% of the population 12 years of age and older. The first dose coverage rate is 90%.

For young children aged five to 11, coverage of the first dose has been 14.4% since the shots were introduced last week.

Meanwhile, 604,027 Ontario residents are reported to have recovered from COVID-19, representing about 97% of known cases. The cases resolved increased by 742 cases compared to the previous day.

Active cases in Ontario now stand at 7,217 – up from the previous day when it was at 6,932 and up from November 26 when it was at 5,807. At the height of the second coronavirus spike in January, active cases reached just above 30,000. In the third wave in April, active cases topped 43,000.

The seven-day average has now hit 866, up from 711 the week before. A month ago, the seven-day average was around 375.

The government said 39,748 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. There are 16,032 tests currently under investigation.

The positive level of the test reached 2.9%. Last week, the test’s positivity was 3%.
