Opinion: What Representative Massie’s Christmas photo says about GOP today

At another time, using guns and ammunition to mark the birth of Jesus Christ – known as The “Prince of Peace,” who preached a message of love — may have earned at least some Christians and gun control advocates the ratings. But suppose this photo was shared just a few days after a horrific shooting at Michigan’s Oxford High School in which a 15-year-old was accused of killing four other students, which would be an insult to all Americans who value life and decency.
Massie’s comment to “bring ammo please” is all the more disturbing given that the Oxford gunman accused of being Ammunition Search Report on his phone the day before the shooting happened, which prompted an alert for school officials. I find it hard to believe that Massie – a Graduated from MIT who has served in Congress since 2012 – was not aware of that fact. The best, Massie’s Christmas card was spectacularly wrong in time, but there seemed to be more to it than that.
Any doubts that Massie released this photo for any reason other than provocative purposes was answered by Massie himself in the way that he responded to the praises as well as knocking down his so-called Christmas cards. . Example: Massie retweeted comments by conservative spokesman Todd Starnes, who called it? “Best Christmas photo ever!” while also sharing Anthony Scaramucci’s harsh response (“If you’re up against this bad guy, contact me, I’ll give you the powder”).
And for someone who criticized the photo as the “tunnel” below the good taste bar, Massie replied: “BAR is under the couch”, add hashtags, “#sassywithmassie.” Absent from his responses is an admission of lives lost in a school shooting, or a contemplative conversation about gun control.

For Massie, it looks like it’s all about fun and games. Is that vile? Correct. How surprising? Unfortunately there isn’t. Massie is embodying the combination of ruthlessness, callousness, and extremism that have come to define GOP today. We are reminded of this almost weekly, when a Republican representative says or does something callously great with little rebuke from the right. Last week, it was Representative Lauren Boebert openly against Muslim bigotry. Before that, it was the representative of Paul Gosar animation video in which he is depicted killing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene dam of the stubborn and extremism.
Of course, Massie’s selfie of his family brandishing an array of weapons contrasts with his grief mourning families the loss of their loved ones killed in the shootings last week. In fact, at the time Massie posted Saturday’s tweet, the family of 17-year-old shooting victim Madisyn Baldwin – a 12th grader at Oxford University who has been described as “an artist who loves to draw, read and write” – likely in preparation. for the hours of visiting the funeral home held in her honor that afternoon.
And while Massie loved to joke with her Twitter followers this week, the family of 16-year-old Tate Myre will be preparing for the high school student’s funeral. Myre was once a soccer star as well as an academic honor student. His brother wrote after learning of Myre’s death, “I miss you with everything in my heart, Tate. What would I do to see (you) again.”
Michael Flynn's comments on Christianity are outrageous but not surprising

It is hard not to cry when reading about these families and thinking about the pain they are going through. And it’s not just those who lost a loved one last week who feel heartbroken when they see Massie’s emotionless “Christmas card.”

Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter, Jaime, was one of 17 people killed in the Parkland, Florida school shooting in 2018, responded to Massie’s photo with two images of himself.

“Since we’re sharing family photos, this is mine” Guttenberg tweeted. “One was the last picture I ever took of Jaime,” he posted, along with an image of his late daughter holding a pet dog. “That photo,” he continued, “is where she is buried because of the Parkland school shooting,” he wrote alongside a photo depicting Jamie’s gravestone.

Massie should apologize, not only to the families of those killed in last week’s shooting and others, but also to those still recovering from their injuries, such as the 14-year-old girl who was injured by a gun. shot means she was initially placed on a ventilator after surgery. But it’s unlikely Massie will make it. Kindness and caring seem to be seen as weak points in today’s GOP, while intolerance is generally thought to be overcome.

Massie will gleefully celebrate this holiday with his family as he basks in the glory of trolling people with guns and “Christmas card” bullets, while the families of those killed in the school shooting Michigan will bury their children. It is clear that this lack of humanity is no longer simply a symptom of a Republican party led by former President Donald Trump, who is known for his his own inflammatory rhetoric. Instead of that callousness ending with Trump’s 2020 defeat, it became a staple of the GOP today.
