Organs of 4-year-old brain dead boy save three lives

Expressing gratitude to the donor’s family, Professor Surjit Singh, Director of PGIMER, said, “For any family, this is a heartbreaking loss. But families like yours have lost their lives. In the dark, people with the heart to make an offer in the most tragic moments of their lives certainly create a sense of confidence.”

“We at PGIMER are incredibly grateful and appreciative of the family’s will to share the gift of life with three terminally ill organ failure patients.”

“The ways of God are beyond understanding. Who would have thought that Gurjot, our joy, would not be allowed to celebrate a fifth birthday. In fact Gurjot’s life will go on for those others and will give them more days with their families,” said Hardeep Singh, the heartbroken father of the organ donor.

The director of PGIMER adds: “Every transplant provides a fresh start for our patients and is an incredible achievement for the entire team involved in the transplant.

Recalling the heartbreak of April 2, the donor’s father recounted how a generally happy day quickly turned into an unexpected and devastating tragedy. Like any other normal day, the child was busy playing and rolled and fell from above, unconscious.

The first unconscious child was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital in Barnala, where he was transferred to PGIMER. In no time, the family took the child to PGIMER hospital on April 2.

Vipin Koushal, Medical Director, PGIMER Employee cum Nodal, ROTTO (North), said, “As a rule, two confirmation checks with a 12-hour interval were conducted, after which the family was consulted. question about organ donation. The family considered the parties, considered options and finally agreed. ”

With the deceased’s parents agreeing to the organ donation offer, relevant departments began contacting suitable recipients to honor the important family decision.

With no suitable recipient at PGIMER for liver, NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization) was contacted immediately to explore options with other transplant hospitals for suitable recipients.

Finally, the livers allocated by NOTTO to a suitable recipient were admitted to ILBS and sent from PGIMER by road via a green corridor to Delhi.

At the same time, the Department of Nephrology has identified a number of potential recipients who are required to report at the earliest. The cross-match resulted in the identification of two kidney recipients and a combined pancreas and kidney and the transplant of all organs was completed in the early hours of April 10.
