Oscar Pistorius meets ex-boyfriend Reena Steenkamp’s father as part of her bid to get out of jail for her murder

OSCAR Pistorius met ex-girlfriend Reena Steenkamp’s dad, whom he was jailed for murder, it emerged.

Pistorius, 35, was found guilty of killing Reeva, 29, in 2015 and sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison.

The athlete – who is known as Blade Runner – is now eligible for pardon under South African law after serving half of his sentence.

To be eligible for release, inmates must “acknowledge and take responsibility for their actions.”

Attorneys for Reena’s parents June and Barry Steenkamp said Pistorius was involved in a process known as victim-offender dialogue.

Tania Koen confirmed Barry Steenkamp and Pistorius “engaged in a victim-to-victim dialogue on June 22, 2022” but said she would not comment further.

The corrections department said Pistorius had been transferred back to a prison near the capital, Pretoria, from a prison in the eastern Cape, near where Steenkamp’s parents lived.

Spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo, said Pistorius will continue to serve his sentence because participating in the dialogue between the victim and the prisoner does not mean the end of the sentence or pardon.

At the end of last year, Pistorius sent a letter of “grief” to Steenkamps.

They described the Paralympic athlete’s gold medal winning letter as “like tearing a Band-Aid wound”.

The couple’s attorney Tania Coen would not disclose the contents of the letters.

“It made them quite miserable. They didn’t know it was coming and it was sent to me by his attorney.”

Steenkamps said they wanted a face-to-face meeting with Pistorius before he was considered for early release, as well as their rights under South Africa’s victim-inmate dialogue policy.

They had previously said that they wanted to challenge Pistorius on why he shot their daughter.

“Yes, they want to do it face to face,” says Koen.

“Barry has said for years that he wants to see Oscar and he has questions to ask.

“They were not emotionally prepared, but mentally prepared to meet Oscar.

“They accept that there will come a day when Oscar will be eligible for pardon and they will provide input.”

An amnesty hearing for Pistorius was scheduled for October 2021 and later canceled, in part because a meeting between Pistorius and Steenkamps had not been arranged.

Koen spoke ill of the way they were treated: “What was also very upsetting was the disregard for their affections.

“They have to find out the parole board called a day for parole and never informed them about it.”

The multi-season Paralympic champion was initially found guilty of reprehensible murder – an offense equivalent to manslaughter – for killing Reeva.

The Paralympic athlete shot her four times through his bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

He claimed at trial it was a catastrophic accident and that he mistook her for a dangerous intruder.

But prosecutors appealed the manslaughter discovery and secured a murder charge.

Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison for the murder, but prosecutors appealed what they called the shockingly light punishment for the murder.

The Supreme Court of Appeal then doubled his sentence in 2017.
