Oscar Winner Louise Fletcher Who Played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Dies at 88
Louise Fletcher, who won an Oscar for her role as Brutal Nurse Mildred Rised in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, passed away at the age of 88.
Limit line reported that her family notified her through agent David Shaul but no cause of death was given.
Fletcher passed away at the home she built in Montdurausse, France, Shaul says she told her family shortly before her death, “I can’t believe I’ve created something meaningful meaning to my happiness.”
She started her acting career in TV shows like Maverick, The Untouchables and 77 Sunset Strip before going on to star in movies like Gathering of Eagles and Thieves like usa performance that caught the attention of Milos Forman, who was in the selection process One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Forman is said to have considered Ellen Burstyn, Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page before casting Fletcher as one of the film’s most notorious villains – Nurse Ratch.
This proved to be the right choice as Fletcher went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film, and will also be awarded Best Picture, Best Director, and Actor. Best Lead and Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
Born in Birmingham, AL, to deaf parents, Fletcher used sign language in his memorable speech at the Oscars.
She had a guest role in Fence and Joan of Arcadia, which earned Emmy nominations in 1996 and 2004, respectively, and a recurring role on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Fletcher was married to film producer Jerry Bick from 1959 until their divorce in 1977 and had two children, sons John and Andrew Bick.
