OSU Medical Center is operating at full capacity

TULSA, Okla. – As COVID cases continue to rise in Oklahoma due to the omicron variation, hospitals are concerned about capacity.

The chief of staff at OSU Medical Center told 2 News they are feeling the same stress, if not worse, than the previous COVID surge.

“It can feel like everything is back to normal and this is our new normal, but at OSU Medical Center it doesn’t feel like anything,” said Dr. Chuck Thurman, Director of OSU Medical Center. normal.

OSU Medical Center is reporting that it is operating at full capacity with 30 COVID patients. This leads to problems in the emergency room.

“We are waiting for the ER. That means people who are waiting for a room can’t get a room and can move on to a second shift, many hours of waiting,” said Dr. Our hospital doesn’t have that typical. Usually we have really good through booking. “

The difference in this spike compared to the previous ones is the number of employees leaving more.

“Our typical employees may have to work 55 to 60 more shifts,” says Dr. Thurman.

Besides the lack of staff, the hospital also doesn’t have enough testing supplies, which can only provide 2 to 3 days.

“We don’t even have enough tests to test globally like we did before,” he said.

While many people are tired of hearing about the pandemic, Dr. Thurman says it’s not over yet.

“We must refocus our efforts for the good of all of us and support our healthcare there,” said Dr.

He says you can support healthcare workers by following precautions, getting vaccinated and booster shots.

2 News checked with other hospitals in Tulsa.

Hillcrest says they’ve seen an increase in hospitalizations due to COVID but that’s not the majority of what they’re seeing. They say their capacity issue is a combination of COVID and other conditions.

Saint Francis told 2 News that little has changed from their update last week when they started using the corridor for patients. Ascension Saint John could not comment.
