Oxford community reacts to school shooting | News

On Tuesday evening, a vigil was held at Lakepoint Community Church in Oxford Village to honor those lost in a shooting at Oxford High School.

Owen Avery, a senior at Oxford, said: “I can’t believe something like this has happened.

What started as an ordinary day for Oxford High School senior Owen Avery has turned into a nightmare. He was in class when he heard gunshots.

Sheriff: 4 dead, many injured, suspect in custody after Oxford High School shooting

“I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible,” Avery said.

Avery didn’t know if she could escape. He quickly noticed an exit.

He and his classmates ran out of the chaos and didn’t stop running. Avery said that about halfway to Meijer, he felt the urge to go back

“I want to come back and help and make sure everything is okay,” Avery said.

Three students, a 16-year-old boy and two 14- and 17-year-old girls, were killed. Eight other people were injured, including a teacher.

The 15-year-old gunman was arrested within five minutes of the first of dozens of 911 calls.

Rachel Bieda, a local resident, said: “I was really shocked when I heard about the lockdowns.

Bieda lived nearby and never thought a school shooting would happen in her community.

“I couldn’t understand what was going on in everyone’s mind, including the families who lost their child,” Bieda said.

She knew two teachers at the high school and still didn’t know if one of them was injured.

“I’m not sure if that’s something I really wasn’t hoping for,” Bieda said.

Tia Runyon rushed to pick up her daughter at a nearby school when she heard about the shooting.

“Just one of those things, I’m sure people are thinking you never expected to happen here,” Runyon said.

Runyon was emotional as she didn’t know if she knew any of the victims.

“I just had so many family and friends with kids or just loved ones in school staff that I cared about so much, which were my teachers and friends growing up,” says Runyon.

She is praying for the entire Oxford community because in a small town she says everyone is family.

“I’m really distraught when I think about how they’re going to get through it,” Runyon said.
