Pakistan reports first polio case in 15 months | Health News

“It is with great sadness to share that a 15-month-old boy has been paralyzed in North Waziristan,” wrote Shahzad Baig, a coordinator of Pakistan’s National Emergency Operations Center for Polio Elimination Program.

He added: “Pakistan confirms one case of wild #poliovirus after almost 15 months.

The country’s last case was discovered in January 2021. Earlier this year, authorities celebrated 12 months that had passed without a single case – the first time since the elimination attempt. destruction begins.

Pakistan is one of two countries, along with neighboring Afghanistan, where polio is endemic is still endemicalthough the number of cases has decreased significantly in recent years.

The North Waziristan case brings the global number of polio cases in 2022 to three, with one also confirmed in Malawi and another in Afghanistan, according to data from the Elimination Initiative Global Polio (GPEI).

The case in Malawi was confirmed in February although the onset of paralysis came in November 2021, according to GPEI.

Pakistani authorities say they are working to ensure the virus does not spread further in the South Asian country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office said he would chair an emergency meeting of the polio eradication task force on Monday.

Nigeria officially eradicated wild polio by 2020. Pakistani officials in February said they were hoping to achieve a similar goal in the coming years.

To officially eradicate the disease, a country must be polio-free for three consecutive years.
