Parents say her son was pepper sprayed while walking on the street innocently at school, without medical attention | News

The safety of students has been called into question following an incident at a Genesee County school.

Last week, a fight broke out at Southwest Flint Classics Academy. Parents said that to break up the scuffle, a police officer sprayed a crowd of students with pepper spray with irritating chemicals that affected students who were not involved in the scuffle.

Betty Nostrand said: “No child should ever be arrested, especially when they have done nothing wrong.

Nostrand said her 15-year-old son Charles was pepper sprayed at Southwest Flint Classics Academy. She said he was on his way to the school bus on Friday when a fight broke out in the hallway.

Her son told her that a Flint police officer sprayed students with pepper spray without warning to disrupt it.

“Then they were all told to get on the bus. Nostrand said.

Nostrand said the bus ride to her home took about 25 to 30 minutes. It was around that time that her son suffered from itchy, irritated eyes.

“He ran into the house screaming, ‘It hurts,’ and I immediately started pouring milk on it, water and cold compresses,” says Nostrand.

Nostrand said the incident particularly concerns her because her son is a special needs student who has had asthma and other breathing problems. She said when the school informed parents of what had happened, they skipped the part about the student being maced.

“I was very upset,” Nostrand said.

Superintendent Kevelin Jones released a statement acknowledging that police were called in to break up the altercation. State that the safety and well-being of the school community is of primary concern and that the school has followed safety procedures including locking doors while police handle the incident.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the school board came up with ideas to prevent a repeat of what happened on Friday.

As for Charles, his mother said he was suffering from psychological trauma.

Nostrand said: “He tried to come back but psychologically he just stopped.

Nostrand said she is debating switching schools. Plus, she wants the district to make this right.
