Baltimore police are still looking for the man who shoot and kill Maliyah Turner, 13, last week. Her friends and family joined the walk for peace on Saturday night to demand justice.
Maliyah’s family says she is a mother and she enjoys taking care of her cousins and keeping an eye on them.
She is also very involved in after-school activities, many of which take place at the Lillian S. Jones Recreation Center. That’s also where Maliyah was found Thursday. A memory of her life remains at the center of the performance.
“She plays in the community every day. She comes to this showcase every day, and that’s sad,” said Sade Cawthorn, a cousin. “Maliyah is a lovely, cute and funny little girl. She worries everyone. Not in a bad way but in a good way, and it’s really sad that this has happened to her.”
Her family and friends walked and chanted on the same block to demand answers behind Maliyah’s death. They said they wanted people – especially young people – to know that solving problems does not require violence.
A family friend said that Maliyah went to the wrong place, at the wrong time when someone turned the corner while she was playing and shot her.
