Pennsylvania woman found guilty in US Capitol riot case | Politics News

The jury found Riley June Williams on six counts but have yet to agree on whether she stole Nancy Pelosi’s laptop.

A Pennsylvania woman accused of breaking in Congress of the United States of America on January 6, 2021, was convicted of six federal charges, including civil disorder, theft of government property, and assaulting a police officer.

But on Monday, a jury decided Riley June Williams’ case could not reach a unanimous verdict on two other charges, including whether she stole a laptop from his office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered Williams’ arrest, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after a jury reached a verdict.

Williams is one of the estimated 900 defendants arrested in connection with the attack on the Capitol, which comes as the US Congress is confirming Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

The attack came after then-President Donald Trump’s “Stop Theft” rally, where Trump falsely claimed to have won the election “in a landslide”.

Williams attended the rally wearing a t-shirt that read “I support catfish,” referring to a group of open-minded white supremacists who are affiliated with Nick Fuentes, one support the “America First” movement.

She then joins thousands of rioters who Enter the Parliament buildingforcing lawmakers to evacuate.

Videos from that day show Williams directing other rioters to “push, push, push” against federal law enforcement as they try to disperse the Capitol Roundhouse. She also pointed the rioters toward the stairs leading to Pelosi’s office.

In court filings in June, prosecutors described Williams as “one of the frontrunners of the rioters,” serving as a leader for others.

“She repeatedly engaged in purported physical and verbal clashes with federal law enforcement officers and instructed others to do the same,” prosecutors wrote.

Another video, posted to Williams’ social media, shows what appears to be Hewlett-Packard laptop theft from Pelosi’s office. The voice, which prosecutors identified as Williams’s, could be heard saying, “Dude, put on your gloves” before a pair of gloved hands grabbed the computer.

Williams later bragged on social media that she took Pelosi’s hammer and hard drive. “To date, neither the laptop nor the hammer have been found,” prosecutors said.

In the days following the attack on the Capitol, a witness called the Federal Bureau of Investigation with information that Williams “was planning to send computer equipment to a friend in Russia, who then intended to sell the device to someone else.” SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence agency.

Williams denied the allegations, claiming that they were “fabricated” by her ex-boyfriend.

During her trial, prosecutors linked Williams to a radical philosophy called “accelerationism,” which viewed Western governments as corrupt and attempted to hasten their downfall.

“She not only specifically sought to prevent Congress from certifying the Electoral College vote, but also undermined and impeded the government as a whole,” prosecutors wrote in the court filing.
