Performance evaluation of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS 2023

The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS has always been regarded as the hottie in the range and continues to excel with a balance between everyday drivability and outright entertainment.

It’s been a really tough day for the 911 GTS, as I’m deciding between it and the more racing 911 GT3… but It was not a difficult day for me…

On the same day, the Porsche 911 GT3 jumped straight to the top auto expert leaderboards, which could overshadow the GTS’s capabilities. With that said, it’s hard to keep a smile on your face when you hit the gas and it rushes around every corner.

Well, it’s not an all-around race car, nor is it intended, but it has to be one of the fastest Porsches I’ve ever driven, and the lap times it achieves and how which it did, pretty impressive!

Engine

Power delivery is impressively smooth and linear, delivering exactly what I asked for with enough power to impress most people.

353kW and 570Nm not crazy numbers these days, but it certainly delivers per kilowatt and newton meter it is quoting.

The craziest thing for me is how close the 911 GTS and 911 GT3 are in terms of 0-100 km/h acceleration times, there’s basically nothing separating them. 911 GTS best time management 3.42 secondsget past the GT3 by 0.02 seconds, and both are pretty much what Porsche claims they should be.

On the track, it’s hard to go wrong with such a drivable engine, with everything so seamless and connected. It operates from 2000 rpm all the way up to the 7400 rpm limit, with an overlap of torque and power that will make any engine manufacturer the envy of.

brake

I am really impressed with the brakes of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, it is super stable and gives me confidence from the first application.

In the 0-100 km/h brake test, it actually outperformed the 911 GT3, which doesn’t like stopping at much slower speeds, especially when there’s no tire temperature.

Initially, it made brake evaluation even easier than the GT3 and a much more user-friendly package for everyday use.

chassis

It’s insane how much traction Porsche has produced from this car and how it maintains body control without sacrificing traction – which is easier said than done.

This is by far one of the easiest Porsches I’ve ever driven.

Because it’s so hard to force the rear to break traction, you’d assume it’s actually biting when it does, but it’s not.

I feel very in control when it comes out and it just slips a little bit, and I can manage it easily.

Transmission and differential

Shifting with the PDK dual-clutch transmission is excellent – ​​super responsive and evenly spaced gear ratios.

Of course, the engine’s versatility helps to mask any issues here, but we know from Porsche’s technical standards that we’ve put a lot of thought into this.

The rear differential must be a work of art! It did such an impressive job without going unnoticed. It’s subtle, smooth, and does exactly what’s required.

This is packed with rear suspension and geometry, making for one of the best rear-wheel drive experiences I’ve ever had. Not once have I felt the need to add a front and center differential, it feels just right.

Suspended

The suspension is surprisingly comfortable and compliant when you hit any bumps or curbs, and I was actually able to use more track with the Porsche 911 GTS than with the GT3.

It’s impressive that it managed to achieve this compliance without sacrificing too much body control, and the rear end is particularly well-supported, which means you can really lean on it in corners. cornering without tipping over and that energy sends you off to the side.

There is still some softness in the front of the car, especially compared to the GT3, but they can ignore this since the rear is already so much connected.

When the tires warmed up, I was a bit understaffed, but then I could easily create some overdrive to help turn the car into the middle of a corner.

Drive system

The steering is great; very accurate without any nasty reactions.

I can really feel where I am with the tire and how well I can push it in a way that makes me more sensitive to any drop.

With this level of feedback and control, I can really bring the car to the edge of the track with confidence and ease.

Wheels and Tires

Moving from a 911 GT3 with a Michelin Cup 2 to a 911 GTS with Pirelli P Zero tires, is a pretty big change and not a fair comparison.

But the drop with the Pirellis on the track was very noticeable and I couldn’t do two quick laps in a row without immediately slowing down.

There’s a lot of power managed through the 305/30 R21 rear tire, and it’s a bit too much for flat road operation.

The balance between the front and rear tires is excellent, with the smaller 245/35 R20 front tires complementing the necessarily larger rear rubber.

Driver Assistance (Electronic)

I ran the fastest laps with traction control and stability control turned off in Sport mode.

The only problem I’ve noticed is that as the tire gets hotter it starts to interfere a bit more.

The driving mode is Sport Plus, the spoiler is enlarged and the suspension is also in Sport form.

Cockpit (Ergonomics)

The sitting position is really good, I can sit low, nice and at a good angle.

For track work, the GTS seats are still very capable, but without the lateral support like the GT3’s race seats. However, they won out for comfort and adjustability.

The steering wheel is also excellent with an Alcantara finish to ensure a good grip. Having the drive mode selector on the steering wheel is nice, although once on the track it’s pretty much set and forgotten.

Overall, the dashboard layout is simple but very effective and I like the center-mounted RPM gauge, but on the track I would have preferred some of the larger gears.

Time ring

No wonder the Porsche 911 GTS positions are right near the top auto expert leaderboard and actually became the fastest car without Michelin Cup 2 tires, with a few cars also wearing the aforementioned tyres!

One of the easiest, most balanced and easy to drive performance cars on the market, 55.48 seconds lap ranks it right behind the Porsche 911 GT variants, with a much more compromise and user-friendly package.

No matter how much I love the GT3 on the track, it’s hard to dismiss the Porsche 911 GTS as one of the best options in the Porsche lineup.
