Perry Police say the officer was injured in Tuesday morning’s shooting


Sheriff Perry was shot in the leg at close range during a fight with a suspect Tuesday morning, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Eric Vaughn was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Shot to his upper thigh. He is expected to be released tomorrow. The episode begins with police officer Perry responding to a shooting just before 5 a.m. It was reported that a suspect, identified as Jeremiah Messner, 30, of Perry, shot out the back window of a vehicle. No one was inside that vehicle at the time. The police then negotiated with Messner along the city’s bike trail. During the negotiations, Messner wanted a lighter. Police provided Messner with a lighter and he initially dropped the weapon. However, when the police came to arrest him, he was able to retrieve the weapon and use it. That’s when he shot Vaughn. Next, the delegates deploy the Quest and are able to subdue Messner. Messner was charged with possession of a firearm, a Class D felony; intentionally armed, a Class D felony; and attempted murder in a Class B felony. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. Perry News reported that one officer who was shot in the line of duty was Sheriff Eric Vaughn. The newspaper reported that Vaughn was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. His condition has yet to be announced. Perry News reported that a suspect in the shooting has been taken into custody.
