The probe is part of a continuing investigation into campaign finance crimes conducted during Peru’s 2021 presidential race.

Peruvian prosecutors are investigating President Dina Boluarte and former president Pedro Castillo for alleged money laundering as part of a criminal organization.

The investigation into Boluarte and Castillo’s alleged crimes is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged campaign finance crimes that occurred during Peru’s 2021 presidential race.

The announcement by the attorney general’s office on Tuesday came after a former adviser to Castillo told local media that he had partially funded Castillo’s presidential campaign in 2021, as well as trips to Boluarte when she was running for vice president of Castillo.

“The alleged commission of these crimes will occur during the Peru Libre election campaign,” the attorney general’s office said, referring to the Marxist party that installed Castillo as president. system of the Andean nation.

Over the weekend, Boluarte denied receiving illegal campaign donations and said the corruption allegations were a “political act” aimed at undermining her government.

Political crisis

Castillo was removed from office in December after attempting to dissolve Congress before an impeachment vote. Boluarte ascends to the presidency after being removed and arrested.

Peru has been embroiled in a political crisis ever since. Boluarte came to power as president but has faced calls to resign from protesters who also demand new elections.

Boluarte is also currently under investigation for her alleged role in the deaths of protesters killed in clashes with security forces in the months after she took office.

According to the ombudsman’s office, 49 civilians and seven members of the security forces have been killed in clashes since protests began in December.

Even if Boluarte faces a specific charge, as president she cannot appear in court until her term ends in 2026.

Boluarte is the sixth president of Peru since March 2018 and the first woman to hold the role.

The prosecutors’ announcement came just before Congress, controlled by the right but now an ally of Boluarte, will debate on Thursday the acceptance of a motion to remove the president.
